Skeleton Crew: How Ratatouille inspired everyone's favorite new droid
By Meg Dowell
With every new Star Wars series, there seems to be another droid audiences can't help but fall in love with. In Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, the next original Disney+ series to premiere set in a galaxy far, far away, SM-33 is the droid everyone can't stop talking about. And why would they want to?
Voiced by comedian Nick Frost, the pirate droid may not be all there -- in body and memory core alike -- but that doesn't mean he's non-functional. Star Wars droids are always reliable sources of comic relief, no matter the circumstances, but it looks like SM-33 might have a bit of a sharp edge to him, too. He is a pirate, after all.
Any actor familiar with the film and television space will find a way to draw inspiration from stories that have come before in order to craft new characters, especially ones from a universe as unique as Star Wars. One Pixar film in particular helped Frost develop a bit of a backstory for the droid he voices in Skeleton Crew. Something set in France, maybe involving a restaurant?
Frost likes to think of SM-33's relationship to the creature in his head as a sort of Star Wars version of Ratatouille -- where the droid is the chef with a rat controlling his every move.
"I think a lot of the whimsy that he finds is him malfunctioning and kind of enjoying it. I always imagine that it makes his brain tickle," he told StarWars.com.
This upcoming live-action series follows a group of kids who accidentally embark on a dangerous adventure across the galaxy. Based on the trailers we've seen so far, it looks like it's going to be a fun, wild ride.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew premieres its first two episodes on December 3, exclusively on Disney+.
