To celebrate ten years of storytelling for Star Wars comics, Marvel has announced a one-shot issue called Star Wars: A New Legacy arriving on January 29, 2025.

Many of us have enjoyed the Marvel Comics issues dating back to the movie adaptations in the 1970s, with stories about hoojibs, Crimson Jack, and the other continuing adventures of the Star Warriors. On January 14, 2015, the publisher released Star Wars (2015) #1 to kick off new stories for the next generation by writer Jason Aaron, featuring dynamic cover art by its penciler, John Cassaday. An opening crawl promised excitement as "the Rebels look to press their advantage by unleashing a daring offensive throughout the far reaches of space."

The Legacy

Ten years after the launch of these new series, a one-shot comic will be released in January to celebrate many of the fan-favorite stories and characters. According to Marvel Comics' announcement, Star Wars: A New Legacy "will feature all-new stories by some of the most impactful Star Wars comic creators of the decade!" This roster includes Charles Soule, Jason Aaron, and Kieron Gillen. Editor Mark Paniccia hails this as a "great package...with some of the most influential Star Wars comic writers in recent history along with amazing art."

The issue will "spotlight as many of the Marvel-created characters as could" and promises that "longtime and new fans alike will get a kick in the thrusters with this!"

The stories

Three storylines are slated to be included in the comic issue. Charles Soule and Ramon Rosanas bring Doctor Aphra and Sana Starros to Alderaan for a heist that takes place during an event in which the Emperor is honored by Darth Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin. "And a Sith artifact threatens to spoil the party for everyone!" Marvel promises. Little does everyone know that Valance the Hunter can be quite the party crasher too!

Bringing back Task Force 99 (aka Scar Squadron), Jason Aaron and Leonard Kirk continue the storyline of "this elite group of stormtroopers... answered directly to Darth Vader and were among the deadliest threats Luke, Leia, and the Rebellion faced."

Finally, Kieron Gillen brings back fan favorite and "breakout star Doctor Aphra." Vader and the morally-complicated Aphra are featured in "a story set during acclaimed run of DARTH VADER (2015)," along with Aphra's old crew of 0-0-0, BT-1, and Krrsantan.

We still have a few months until this special one-shot, but there is plenty to look forward to each week in Star Wars Comics. Star Wars: A New Legacy arrives in comic shops on January 29, 2025.
