Andor is once again making splashes as one of the top shows on the Disney+ streaming platform. And, according to the Television Critics Association (TCA), it's one of the top shows on any platform, with three nominations, including "Program of the Year" and "Outstanding Achievement in Drama."
The TCA has also nominated Diego Luna for the "Individual Achievement in Drama" award.
With the cancellation of TCA's summer press tour, winners won't be able to receive their award at an in-person ceremony. While this is certainly disappointing—at least, assuming Luna and the rest of the crew of Andor win—just getting even a single nomination isn't easy. The TCA includes over 200 professional journalists from the US and Canada.
Here's what TCA president Andy Dehnart said about the nominees:
“With these nominations, we honor the art of television and the artists who create it. Our members independently selected these nominees, having championed these shows and in their writing, reporting and criticism throughout the past year.”
In 2023, Andor's first season also received three nominations ("Program of the Year," "Outstanding New Program," and "Outstanding Achievement in Drama"). Unfortunately, it walked away with no wins, losing out to HBO's Succession and FX's The Bear.
With the announcement of the Emmy nominations just around the corner, could this be something of a preview of what's to come? While Disney itself saw a surge in Emmy nominations last year with 183 nominations and 60 wins, most of those came from its other outlets, such as ABC, National Geographic, FX, etc. Disney+'s representation was somewhat slim by comparison, with only 32.
This year, Andor's hope is to surpass The Mandalorian's record-breaking 24-nomination second season. And, with the critical acclaim it's already receiving, this feels like a very real possibility, even if there is some stiff competition with shows such as The Last of Us (coincidentally starring The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal), Severence, and The White Lotus.
