Did Lucasfilm accidentally leak a Skeleton Crew spoiler?

Well well well, what have we here?

This morning, I settled into writing a speculative piece about the upcoming series Skeleton Crew. After the recent trailer, the showrunners Jon Watts and Chris Ford were interviewed by StarWars.com to discuss the series in more detail. One part stood out to me, so I took some time to muse about it.

In the original article, as captured here by Caitlin from Skytalkers podcast, Ford discusses the homeworld of the kid protagonists. He says, "It's the story of kids who happen to live on what they think of as a boring planet-- it seems like the suburbs, and nothing ever happens. And one day they find an old spaceship and it blasts them off, out into the galaxy. They realize that no one's ever heard of their home planet."

I noticed something weird when I pulled up the original article this morning to write about this piece. Everything about the kids' home planet is wiped from the article! All the article says now is, "It’s the story of kids who happen to live on what they think of as a boring planet. Unfortunately, along the way they attract the attention of a bunch of pirates and other space criminals.”

Well, well, well, isn't that fascinating? The original quote caught the interest of fans because it hinted something more sinister was happening on this supposedly happy suburban planet. However, the trailer is full of droids on their homeworld that seem to be surveillance droids. Fern's mother, Fara, played by Kerry Condon, specifically tells Wim's father, Wendle, played by Tunde Adebimpe, that something is very wrong at their home. There's a chilling shot of one of the surveillance droids watching Wendle from afar.

My original speculative piece is their home is part of the New Republic Amnesty Program, and this is a nice sort of prison camp. This would tie it back into the rest of the Mandoverse, where we know this has been an important plot point, specifically in Season 3 of The Mandalorian. There are also books set in this time period, specifically Alphabet Squadron by Alex Freed, where it was confirmed that the New Republic had prison camps for the worst of the worst. I was going to speculate that this world could have been for the not-so-bad Imperials to try and start over. Stories like Star Wars Resistance revealed there were normal, everyday people like Tam's grandfather who worked in Imperial factories because it was the only job he could get. It didn't make him evil. He simply wanted to put food on the table for his family. I was going to say that this last example was my speculation for Skeleton Crew.

However, it's far more interesting that everything about the children's planet has been wiped from the original article. It makes the speculation for Skeleton Crew all the more fun, and I can't wait for the series to drop on December 3.
