We can look to several pilots in the Star Wars franchise as role models. Characters such as Wedge Antilles and Jessika Pava have graced the screen and been fine examples of powerful pilots who help to save the galaxy.
Wedge Antilles was the primary X-Wing pilot in the original trilogy and was one of the main leaders of the unit Rogue Squadron in both the canon and Star Wars Legends timeline. Their story and bravery inspired another real world Rogue Squadron, which helps a certain part of our world.
The 75th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron is stationed out of the Horn of Africa, providing airlift support for that region of the world, including Somalia and Kenya. One of the ships that is a part of the wing and unit is the Lockheed C-130 Hercules. It is an airlift cargo ship that, in my opinion, bears some resemblance to the resistance bombers featured in The Last Jedi.
Many airmen who have been stationed in the region have commented on the similarities between the Horn of Africa and elements of the Star Wars franchise. Lt. Colonel Gregg Montijo spoke of Star Wars and the air wing to Task and Purpose, “There was some terrain that was just like the Death Star trench run. A-10s are so maneuverable that you can go in there, and it felt like you were on the Death Star. We’d do that and pretend we were Luke Skywalker.”
The A-10 Thunderbolt that he spoke of is a single-seat craft that can be used in low air speeds and altitudes. It has both engines and wings that almost look like a combination of an X-Wing and Y-wing.
Although the unit is called Rogue Squadron, a military unit would not necessarily be known for breaking protocol. As a former member of the US Air Force I can speak that it would not go over well with my chain of command if they became "Rogue." However, dealing with the terrain of Africa and helping to bring about change and assist in aiding the region may be why the unit has possibly earned the nickname. Which is exactly what Rogue Squadron stands for throughout the Star Wars franchise.
In my opinion, Star Wars has always had its roots in drawing inspiration from military units around the world. The Real Rogue Squadron may find its inspiration from the franchise. However, it can go on its own to inspire and be heroes for the world and fans of Star Wars.
