Gifts for LEGO Star Wars fans are on everyone's minds at this time of year, whether you're finding the perfect item for someone else or hoping to be on the receiving end. Since the New Year is coming up fast, you might be thinking about things announced for 2025. The Bothan spies are now telling us that there might be a second Death Star LEGO set in the works for 2025, but it has a whopper of a price tag.
LEGO's 2025 Death Star set could set a price record
We have to look no further than TheGamer for the details we do have, but they have an excellent summary of what else we can guess. Their source, Falconbricks, said, "details over the weekend that Lego appears to be planning a new UCS Death Star 2 set and that it will likely be released on October 1, 2025." It will be an investment, though. Says Josh Coulson of TheGamer, "the only other concrete detail from the leak is that the set is expected to cost a whopping $999.99."
If that price point gives you pause, you're not alone. Coulson points out that there are only two LEGO sets close to that currently for sale, and both are from Star Wars. The Millennium Falcon and AT-AT sets both retail at $849.99. The "fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy" is back ordered, but the Imperial walkers are out of stock.
These kinds of high-end sets are from the Ultimate Collector Series, which has been making its mark with intricacy and complexity since the beginning of this century. Brickfanatics.com published a retrospective on "A potted history of the most expensive LEGO Star Wars sets ever" and recalled that the 2000 releases of the 7181 TIE Interceptor and 7191 X-wing Fighter "were priced at $100 and $150 a piece, which was more than double any LEGO Star Wars set that came before." In the top 15 most expensive sets for fans of the galaxy far, far away, they have such crafts as Vader's Super Star Destroyer and 2008's 20188 Death Star.
How many pieces will make up the 2025 LEGO Death Star set?
We don't have the exact figure yet, but Coulson has speculated on it based on sets of a similar scale. "The AT-AT is 6,785 pieces, while the Millennium Falcon clocks in at 7,541. You'd think for an additional $140, Lego's new Death Star is going to be made up of 8,000 pieces, at least." He reports that the previous version of this Death Star, released in 2005, was made up of just under 3500 pieces and hopes that this new set "will be far more elaborate than its predecessor."
However many pieces are in store for set collectors, this looks to be an epic release. We look forward to finding out more about this unprecedented LEGO set as the release date gets closer.
