As members of an audience, we often don't think about the actors behind the characters they are playing. While some performances are just that -- an act -- many performers actually draw on their own experiences to make a scene come alive. This was the case with actor Kyriana Kratter while filming episode 6, "Zero Friends Again," of the latest Star Wars Disney+ original show Skeleton Crew.
"My whole life, people have said, ‘Talk louder, speak up,’” Kratter told The Hollywood Reporter. KB, the character Kratter plays in the show, also struggles to find her voice, particularly in the latest episode. She is afraid that if she speaks up and tells Fern how she really feels, the other member of the crew won't want to be her friend anymore.
KB particularly struggles in her relationship with her best friend Fern. While Fern recognizes her different abilities, she also tends to treat KB as if she's just like everyone else -- so much so that KB's life is actually put in danger. By the end of the episode, KB has opened up about how hard it is to keep up with everyone else, which will likely make things a little bit easier for her down the road.
Much like KB, Kratter found a way to speak up even when it was scary. Approaching Bryce Dallas Howard, the director of last week's episode, she asked if she could "try a version [of a take] that was just a little bit more angry." Howard encouraged her to go for it. Sometimes, even when it's scary, speaking your mind can lead to an even better outcome than you ever could have imagined.
Kratter has already learned an extremely valuable lesson about acting: Bringing your fears and worries into the role you are playing on screen can actually do much more good than harm. She gave an emotional and extremely relatable performance this week, likely because she herself knew how difficult it can be to stand up for yourself among those you admire.
