Maybe I'm old school, but this Star Wars: Skeleton Crew news reveal got me really excited. I'm here for the return of some puppets in Star Wars!
As part of the roundtable with Empire Online, director David Lowery shared one surprise that will appear in his episode of Skeleton Crew: Teek from the 1985 made for TV movie Ewoks: The Battle of Endor.
Lowery said, "I was most excited about having hand puppets on set. It’s the most ancient technology being used with the most cutting-edge technology, simultaneously. That combination was absolutely magical. There’s a character in my episode that’s […] the Teek, from Battle For Endor. And it’s just a little hand puppet! It’s just (wiggles hand). I was like, ‘Is he gonna get digitally touched up, or replaced?’ No, in the final episode, it’s just a hand puppet in the middle of this crazy Volume set. The cognitive dissonance of seeing those two things together, live in front of you, is absolutely incredible.”
One thing to note in this is that Lowery calls the character "the Teek" and not just "Teek." More than likely, this is a member of the Teek species versus the character Teek himself from the film.
Still, this news is incredibly exciting. I'm always here for practical effects, and hearing the series will blend them together with cutting-edge technology, that's incredibly exciting for me. I'm also a sucker for puppets! I love a puppet in Star Wars.
This news comes at a big anniversary too! Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure turns 40 years old in November. With Skeleton Crew coming out the following month, it seems like the right time to have Teek come back into the canon.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew arrives on Disney+ on December 3.
