Spoilers for Skeleton Crew episode 7, "We're Gonna Be In So Much Trouble."
After every new episode of anything Star Wars, I like to check in with my friends over at the Dark Side Divas and their Discord channel. Episode 7 of Skeleton Crew, "We're Gonna Be In So Much Trouble," was no exception. The penultimate episode had us all screaming. Then, I saw a take that really made something click about Jude Law's character, Jod Na Nawood. User Salladhor Hoole in the Discord channel shared:
"Like 80% sure Jod is a former Inquisitor. It would explain his weirdly paradoxical knowledge of the Jedi and his power-oriented ideology." He then added, "Big crackpot hours: that helmet he wears was his inquisitor mask."
And I ADORE this theory.
Jod was scary in this episode, truly the most threatening he's ever been. He cold-bloodedly kills Captain Brutus without a second thought to the horror of the kids looking on. If he was an ex-Inquisitor, that would explain so much about how he has knowledge of Jedi lessons but genuinely bastardizes the meaning behind the platitudes. He does not value life, only power and being in control. Telling Brutus, "The crew loves me," and being proud of that little bit shows his selfishness. It would also give extra weight to his "I am hungry" speech from episode 6, especially if he never agreed with Jedi rhetoric to begin with. This isn't The High Republic era, where there are various different Force factions established in the galaxy. A young Jod might not have had a choice as a Force user and was forced (pun intended) to be a space monk with no other options.
This would also help define Jod away from past Jedi stories. He has a lot of similarities to Kanan Jarrus and other rogue-like Jedi who survived Order 66. However, a story about an ex-Inquisitor running around the galaxy in this time period is something very fresh and new on screen. Some Inquisitors are roaming about like in Ahsoka, but to have a fully fleshed-out dark side character in this time period of the Knights of Ren, the Nightsisters, and Luke Skywalker's Jedi school adds a bit of extra flavor into the mix.
And if his Captain Silvo helmet was his old Inquisitor mask, that's just the cherry on top.
With one episode left of Skeleton Crew, we're going to have to see how Jod's story resolves or (my hope) left open ended for possible future seasons. And check out the Dark Side Divas for some of the best Star Wars content around!
