When it comes to Star Wars directors, Taika Waititi has arguably done the most with minimal credits. His episode of The Mandalorian remains one of the series' most astonishing chapters to date. An accomplished writer, director, and actor, Waititi possesses a unique knowledge of filmmaking from both in front of and behind the camera. He's no stranger to Star Wars, either; the likelihood that his franchise film will still happen remains high, maybe now more so than ever.
There's a lot of info out there -- officially confirmed and otherwise -- about the next Star Wars movies to hit theaters over the next few years and beyond. Waititi's project remains one of the most uncertain ... and definitely the most mysterious. A new rumor suggests that the project, which seemed to have been put on hold, may still eventually make it to production after all.
Star Wars fans first learned of writer and director Waititi's possible involvement with a feature-length film back in 2020. The now-infamous Disney Investor Day announced an impressive slate of upcoming projects, many of which have seemingly fallen off the radar. This movie, however, could still be happening after all. According to a report from Nexus Point News, Waititi's previously untitled Star Wars film now has a working title: Cosmic Doom.
Working titles are nothing new for Star Wars projects or the film industry in general; 1983's Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi operated its production under the fake horror movie title Blue Harvest, for example. A working title, therefore, doesn't guarantee that the movie will actually continue production. It's a fun possibility to think about, though -- especially considering Waititi's positive reputation in the franchise thus far.
Taika Waititi has had the privilege of touching Star Wars on multiple fronts in recent years. Not only has he directed an episode of Disney+'s The Mandalorian (Season 1, episode 8: "Chapter 8: Redemption"), but he also lent his voice to droids IG-11 and IG-12 throughout the series. Many Star Wars fans have also seen his work outside of a galaxy far, far away, such as his contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
A renowned screenwriter and director, Waititi's next logical step in the franchise would either be to create his own Star Wars show or write and direct a Star Wars film. Rumors about his movie have been circulating for nearly five years now, with few updates to speak of. Maybe as other projects move forward -- such as The Mandalorian and Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter -- this one will finally make its way closer to active production as well.
