Over the weekend, it was announced by Variety that a Star Wars film was bumped off the December 2026 release date for Ice Age 6. While we don't officially know what this film was, all sources seem to point out that this was the Rey Skywalker film setting up the return of Daisy Ridley to the franchise and directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
And I'm okay with this news.
There are several back-and-forth reports around the signing of Simon Kinberg taking on the next trilogy, which we discussed here in the "I'll believe it when I see it" category of news. Some seem to hint that it will be a Rey trilogy, which makes sense as she can be a major focus to build the next Star Wars era for a new generation.
I do understand there can be some frustration around this delay as we watch the Marvel Cinematic Universe churn out film after film, tv show after tv show, ratings, critics, and box office results be damned. The MCU is such a well-oiled machine that for every stumble, there's a smash hit (looking at you, Agatha All Along).
However, we've seen what happens when Star Wars rushes films out of the pipeline too fast. I love Solo: A Star Wars Story, and I'm a mad lad who still wants Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to have an animated film despite the bad blood of them leaving the franchise. But Solo had its share of issues that can't be denied, one of which was trying to get it out in time for its release date.
More than anything, I want the next Star Wars films to be done well. Take all the time you need, Lucasfilm. We have The Mandalorian & Grogu to hold us over until then. And with Star Wars Celebration Japan coming up in April of next year, I'm sure we'll get some more announcements and updates too. So hang tight, everyone! Let's see what happens.
