With Season 2 of Andor just weeks away, promotion for the highly anticipated series is ramping up. One way was the official Star Wars YouTube channel hosted a discussion with series creator, Tony Gilroy. There he revealed his favorite scene from Season 1, and it's probably not what you expect.
Via ScreenRant, Gilroy revealed his favorite scene is between Syril Karn, played by Kyler Soller, and his boss Chief Inspector Hyne, played by Rupert Vansittart in episode 1, "Kassa." In the scene, Syril tells Hyne about the murder of two Preox-Morlana guards after they had a run-in with Cassian Andor. Though to be clear, Syril didn't know it was Cassian at that time.
Hyne hears him out, and then dismisses the guards' deaths as an accident, basically telling Syril to drop the case. Syril is horrified that the men won't get justice. However, Hyne doesn't want to bring the Empire to Morlana and disrupt the balance of their work there. Yes, it's a cover up, but it keeps the Imperial presence out of their way. Of course, Syril doesn't listen and ends up getting them all fired when the Empire does come along.
Gilroy shared that the scene was, "what I wanted the show to be able to do" with Andor, which established the tone of the series. The bureaucracy of the Empire is flawed, which is why Hyne can scoot by for so long as the Empire can't be everywhere at once. The lower level authority figures like the Preox-Morlana corporation are allowed to basically be mall cops to keep people in check. However, if they start slipping and mess up, then the Empire will come down on them all.
Hyne knows this, which is why he's more than willing to bend the rules. However, the justice believing Syril thinks the almighty Empire will help them, not realizing this isn't how fascism works. Fascists don't help anyone but themselves. In the end, they all lose.
This scene really does set the stage for Andor, just teasing what's to come for the rest of the series.
