When she was five, my daughter wanted to dress up as BB-8 for Halloween. She asked my wife to dress up as a Torra Doza. Now, four years later, she has asked to play Torra herself for this upcoming holiday. It speaks to the popularity of the character on Star Wars Resistance.
Torra Doza is a member of the Ace pilots and helps defend the ship and her friends while beginning to see the big picture of working with the Resistance against the First Order. Torra is young and, by the looks of the animation, appears to be younger than her fellow pilots. It may be why her costume is popular among young girls and cosplayers and conventions.
The character, however, has a strong strength and confidence throughout the show's two-season run and would allow of younger audiences to understand and emulate her.
Her style may be why she can also resonate with younger women. She wears bright orange and blue jumpsuits and has makeup with both colors displayed under her eyes, almost like a warrior from the past. Her ship also reflects the same colors.
In an interview with Nerdist.com, actress Myrna Velasco (who voices Torra), spoke of the character's style and how she incorporated that into her portrayal. "She just has this cool way of representing herself, which I think everyone should have," said the actress.
She also spoke of the fact that Torra is a cocky character and how that normally goes to male characters, but Torra has a lot of what possibly other characters such as Han Solo or Poe Dameron have. "It's so great... and my reaction is Myrna more badass".
My daughter has observed and made comments that Torra will either save the day or has a much better shot than the lead character of Kazuda. As a parent, finding role models that can be engaging but strong is important, and it seems Torra fits the bill for my nine-year-old.
Princess Leia was the first female hero of Star Wars and she inspired a whole generation of young girls and women. It seems only fitting that in the second season episode of Resistance, "Hunt on Celsor 3", Torra's design was inspired by Princess Leia herself.
In the episode her and Kazuda were on a snow planet looking for food for their ship. Torra's look was inspired by Leia's look in the Empire Strikes Back.
Said art director Amy Beth Christenson on the design, "Torra’s coat ended up being inspired by the jacket that Leia wears in Echo Base on Hoth.”
With the full circle design, now it seems that similar to Leia, Torra can be an inspiration for many fans of the franchise for years to come.
