This was a pleasant surprise that no one was expecting about Yoda when it came the the most recent Star Wars novel which is all about Mace Windu.
Via the YouTube channel Star Wars Explained, it's been revealed that Yoda's original Jedi master, N'Kata Del Gormo, from Star Wars Legends is canon again! This is thanks to an entry of the novel Star Wars Mace Windu: The Glass Abyss. There is a bit of a catch to this being "canon" though.
As Alex Damon describes in his video, even in the Extended Universe timeline, it was a legend that was told of Yoda's early days of training. Supposedly, he crashed landed on the planet in the Hysalria system which is where he met N'Kata Del Gormo. The Jedi Master took a young Yoda on as his padawan until Yoda would be rescued by the Republic later.
The new canon doesn't go into as much detail as the Legends canon. As Mace enters Yoda's dwellings, he notices a sand sculpture. It has been shaped to resemble the Hysalria system, making Mace remember the once legend of Yoda's teachings and his old master, N'Kata Del Gormo. Even then, Yoda changes the sculpture while Mace is there to make it look like a rose. As Damon notes in his video, this is a nice touch to keep Yoda's past still a secret.
There has always been an air of mystery around Yoda. His species doesn't even have a name. Even with later additions to his people like Yaddle and Grogu, there are still plenty we don't know about him. Though, one thing from Legends is still canon:
Yoda speaks the way he does, thanks to Master Del Gormo. It's why Yaddle didn't talk this way in Tales of the Jedi. As Damon notes, this was a choice made by Frank Oz, Yoda's original puppeteer. We'll have to wait and see which of these paths Grogu will take.
