While on tour to promote his newest film A Perfect Day, actor Benicio Del Toro answered some questions about Star Wars: Episode VIII, with website Hitfix. Del Toro confirmed that he would begin filming his role, sometime early this year (this spring), and that he was very excited to be working with Rian Johnson.
"“I’m looking forward to working with Rian Johnson too, who was the one that reached out to me and had the idea of me playing the character that I’m gonna play. So that’s kinda nice.”"
Although we don’t know anything about his role in Star Wars: Episode VIII, Del Toro does mention that he will be starring in the film, which leads us to believe he will more than just a minor, passing role.
"“It’s more surreal now, I’ll tell you that. I mean, after the success…not only at the box office, but the success of the quality of [The Force Awakens]. I really enjoyed the film…so it’s kind of nerve-wracking now, but I’m really happy to be part of it.”"
As to what kind of role Benicio Del Toro will be playing in Star Wars: Episode VIII, the actor will neither confirm or deny the rumors that he will be a Sith-like character…perhaps a Knight of Ren, or acolyte of Supreme Leader Snoke.
"“You know, I’m not supposed to say, but that’s what’s out there, so I’m not gonna try and fight it.”"
Well played, Del Toro, well played. I can’t imagine the man who so perfectly delivered the lines of the Collector in Guardians of the Galaxy, to be anything other than an acolyte of the Dark Side. Hopefully we will find out more, as the year progresses, but for now, we’ve got nearly a year and a half before Star Wars: Episode VIII premieres in May (26) of 2017.
