The Associated Press is reporting that Oscar Isaac, who is portraying X-Wing pilot Poe Dameron in Star Wars: the Force Awakens, has let slip a spoiler for the movie which will hit theaters on December 18, later this year. According to AP, Isaac was being asked if his character was related to Bail Organa played by Jimmy Smits in the second trilogy, to which he answered that there was probably room in the Star Wars galaxy for more than one Latin family.
On the topic of Poe Dameron’s homeworld, Isaac had this to say:
"“What’s actually very interesting is that Yavin … at the end of the very first ‘Star Wars’ … that last scene was shot in Guatemala and you know, I think that Poe Dameron is from that planet … and that’s a beautiful coincidence.”"
The coincidence to which he is referring is the fact that Oscar Isaac himself, was born in Guatemala, and Yavin 4 from Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, was filmed in Tikal, which is an ancient Mayan city in Guatemala. Tikal is home to several Mayan ruins, some of which were even featured in the film.
So if Poe Dameron is from Yavin 4, what does that mean? There are certain rumors that subscribe to the theory that Poe is the son of Han and Leia, and if true, perhaps Lei and Han went back to Yavin 4, where there is an established Rebel base, and there they start their family.
As theories go, this one is the same as all the others, in that we know nothing until J.J. Abrams decides to give us more information. But, it is cool to know that Poe is from Yavin, and that we know for sure he has been sent on a special mission by Leia, in The Force Awakens, as was stated in the special Force Awakens Panel at the Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California, last month.
