Actor Ewan McGregor, who perfectly embodied a young Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequels, has gone on record with his dislike of the crossguard lightsaber used by Kylo Ren, in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Speaking to Thompson on Hollywood at the Edinburgh Film Festival, McGregor had this to say:
"“I’m not sure about the [crossguard] lightsaber. If you fight with a lightsaber properly you don’t need one.”"
As Cinema Blend points out, this isn’t the first time the actor has expressed his displeasure over the clunky looking saber. When speaking to MTV, McGregor explained why he wasn’t a fan of the lightsaber used by Kylo Ren,
"“You don’t need hilts. If you know how to handle a lightsaber, you don’t need a silly hilt. We managed very well, the Jedi order managed very well without hilts for hundreds of millions of years.”"
That comment seems to be coming from Obi-Wan, and not McGregor, which leads us into the next bit of Star Wars news that has been connected to the 44 year old actor. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that McGregor has stated that he definitely wants to come back to the Star Wars cinematic universe, a sentiment that an overwhelming number of fans express on a daily basis.
"“I’d be happy to do the story from episodes three where I finish up and Alec Guinness [who played the older Kenobi in the original Star Wars movies] starts.”"
Now that’s a movie or three that I would watch. McGregor brought the perfect balance of youth and wisdom to a young Obi-Wan Kenobi, and I have always wanted to see what happened to him between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. For now, the actor is looking forward to The Force Awakens, and is more than happy to be a part of the Star Wars legacy.
