Stephen McHattie

Probably the least-known name on this list, but you’ve definitely seen Stephen McHattie before. If not on the big screen in roles in A History of Violence and Watchmen, the actor has also been prolific on TV, including stints on The X-Files and Seinfeld.

He’s a bit of a chameleon of an actor, so it’s tough to pin down exactly why he would make a good Tarkin, aside from the fact that he bears an uncanny resemblance to Cushing. The actor has a raspy, sanded-down voice that conveys both menace and toughness. And his piercing eyes also give him a calculating aura.

McHattie made a huge impression on me with his small turn in A History of Violence, in which he plays half of a psychotic hitman duo who try to stick up a small-town diner. Check out how McHattie is scary right from the start and uses his voice to instantly change the atmosphere in the scene, although be warned that this clip has some R-rated footage of violence.

Anyway, those are my picks for who should play Tarkin, and I think each one of them would be better than a digitally resurrect Cushing. Who would you like to see in the role?
