Anthony Daniels rips Disney over Force Awakens secrecy
By Josh Hill
Anthony Daniels is less than thrilled with the way Disney is putting so much intense secrecy around The Force Awakens.
If you’re been trying to get information about The Force Awakens during production, you’re with everyone else in being pretty much shut out by Disney. The studio is deathly serious about making sure no one outside of the production team knows anything about the film that they don’t want getting out — and that means even coming down hard on actors who try to spread information in an innocent way.
That’s the gripe that Anthony Daniels has with Disney, as he ranted against the studio for what he says is a situation they’re being way too secretive about.
In an interview with Variety, Anthony Daniels ripped Disney for their ‘ludicrous’ secrecy around The Force Awakens and the great lengths that are being traveled to in order to make sure nothing from the film leaks out that Disney doesn’t want out there.
"“The secrecy has been beyond ludicrous,” the 69-year-old actor added. “For heaven’s sake, it’s a movie. When I got the script, it was typed in black on paper of the deepest red so you couldn’t photocopy it. I got a hangover just reading it.”"
Daniels recounted a story in which he sent out a tweet about meeting an actor for one of the Star Wars films, to which Disney sent him a stern reprimanding.
"“Immediately I received a message from Disney: ‘Remove the tweet! You’re not allowed to say that!’” Daniels recalled. “Honestly. It’s a kind of Kremlin attitude.”"
While you can respect the attitude that Daniels has towards all of the secrecy, you can’t really blame Disney that much for the way they’re approaching their new franchise. Spoilers will always get out, but you can control the amount that get out and the significance of them as well. Hearing that an actor is in an upcoming film isn’t that big of a deal, whereas the script leaking out in any form would be catastrophic for the production of The Force Awakens.
Then again, we all want to see as much as we can before The Force Awakens hits theaters this winter, and no one is ever going to side against C-3PO when he goes on an epic rant.
