Spielberg Says The Force Awakens Could Be Biggest Film Ever

Steven Spielberg told a French interviewer, “The Force Awakens could be the biggest movie of all time.”

“I think The Force Awakens could be the biggest movie of all time.”

The above quote from Steven Spielberg, director of Jaws, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, and many other beloved classics, came out of RTL, a French entertainment news site, and was translated by the crew at Making Star Wars. Spielberg began the interview by discussing his most recent film, Bridge of Spies (starring Tom Hanks), but later made time to discuss what was once the franchise of his friend, George Lucas.

It has been lately rumored that Spielberg has seen The Force Awakens three times already (via /Film). J.J. Abrams is a huge fan of the veteran director, so it makes sense the former would want to show one of his “biggest” role models his work on what is likely to literally become the “biggest movie of all time” (or at least till Episode VIII and IX debut in theaters).

What Spielberg means by “biggest” isn’t clear. He could be saying The Force Awakens will be the largest box office success in film history, which wouldn’t be surprising (it’s already projected for a $170 million + haul opening weekend). Or, he might mean the film could be “big” in a purely cinematic sense, with expansive visuals and profound themes unlike any we’ve experienced before, even in the previous Star Wars films. We’ll have to wait for the movie to premiere on December 18th to find out for ourselves.
