When will the first Rogue One trailer air?

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set to hit theaters on December 16, 2016, but we’ve yet to see a trailer for the film. There are three dates that seem most logical for Disney to air that first trailer, and we try our best to guess which one…

More from Dork Side of the Force

In December 2014, Disney/Lucasfilm aired the very first Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer. It was a full year before the film premiered, and it helped to set off a year of exciting news and reveals. Rogue One is set to debut worldwide in December of 2016, so Disney has already missed its first opportunity to follow the path set by The Force Awakens. So, when is the next logical date? Let’s take a look.

The 2016 Super Bowl:

  • Date: Sunday, February 7
  • Time: 5:30 PM
  • Channel: CBS

The reason that the Super Bowl would be a great idea to air the first Rogue One trailer, is that everyone watches the Super Bowl. It is the first major event of the new year, and every company worth their salt tries to get the best and most coverage for their products. There’s also the fun fact that Disney decided to air the third and final full trailer for The Force Awakens during a Monday Night Football game on ESPN. The drawback is, Disney does not own CBS…so there’s that.

Captain America: Civil War:

  • Date: May 6, 2016

For synergy’s sake, Disney could opt to air the first Rogue One trailer in front of Captain America: Civil War. Disney owns both Lucasfilm and Marvel, and this would be an excellent chance to keep it in the family, as it were. With Civil War expected to be a huge summer blockbuster, putting Rogue One front and center in front of a large audience, could garner loads more attention than just randomly releasing the trailer online.

The 2016 Star Wars Celebration:

  • Dates: July 15 – 17
  • Location: London, England

This year’s Star Wars Celebration returns to London, and what better way to celebrate, than by showing the very first full length Rogue One trailer. My only problem with this date is that it is so late in the year. Why would Disney/Lucasfilm miss out on the chance to get fans excited about the first stand-alone Star Wars film, by waiting until 6 months before the film is set to debut. No, I think we might actually get the second Rogue One trailer at the celebration.

An Educated Guess:

If I were a betting man (and I’m not) I would say that we will see the very first Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer, in front of Captain America: Civil War. That would kickoff the summer with a bang for both Marvel and Lucasfilm, and would ultimately benefit Disney, as the company owns both. So, while I am personally hoping for a Rogue One trailer around March or April, my feeling is that May 6, will be the date.
