Matt Martin, manager of digital content and community relations at Lucasfilm, has been promoted to a member of the Lucasfilm Story Group.

Martin is a central figure on Star Wars social media and the official website, and a well-known name among the fandom on Twitter. Early this afternoon, he tweeted today would be his last day on the StarWars.com team. Later, in response to a question about what his new role at LFL would be, Martin announced he was joining the Lucasfilm Story Group.

The Lucasfilm Story Group was founded in 2013 through Kathleen Kennedy’s initiative (via Wookieepedia). Its purpose was and is to create “a single cohesive continuity”; in other words, from the time of its inception onward it would determine what stories, characters, and facts pertaining to the Star Wars universe were to be considered “true” (or canon).

The formation of the Story Group was part of a campaign which included rendering all books prior to the Group’s formation non-canon, or Legends; stories which might be true, but which new content, such as movies, television shows, and new books, are not beholden to.

To date, the group is comprised of individuals who are Star Wars legends in their own rights: Pablo Hidalgo, author of many visual dictionaries for the films and other fascinating literature; Leland Chee, also known as the Keeper of the Holocron (the database of Star Wars information which Lucasfilm uses); Carrie Beck, the Director of Creative Content Strategy at LFL; Diana Williams, Producer of Franchise Synergy at LFL; and, most recently, Martin.

The Story Group is a landmark organization which, as far as I know, no other franchise has at their disposal. Their day by day goal is to make sure everything fits together in the grand scheme of the Star Wars universe with a certain amount of rhyme and reason. Their overarching mission, however, is to make sure nothing in the books, comics, or other miscellaneous content outside of the films conflicts with what’s going on in the films, both past and future ones.
