Super Bowl 50 is this Sunday, February 7, between the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos. Besides the usual clash of gridiron titans — on the field — the Super Bowl has become the platform for the major brands to put forth their best efforts, in order to capture the hearts and minds of the millions of people watching the game from home.
With that in mind, what better venue for Disney to premiere the very first Rogue One trailer? There are a few drawbacks to this idea however. The Super Bowl is played on CBS, and not ESPN or ABC (Disney owned networks), so it would have no control of how the trailer would be hyped before its viewing.
Before The Force Awakens premiered in December of 2015, Disney aired the final full-length trailer for the film, during a Monday Night Football on ESPN. The idea was genius and worked out beautifully for the network (millions of people tuned in to see the trailer for The Force Awakens), and the excitement for the film reached a fever-pitch.
There’s also another knock against showing the Rogue One trailer during the Super Bowl: Despite having such a massive viewing crowd, the film would be just one of many, in a very long list of other film trailers and very well made product commercials to be shown, on that night.
The best bet for when we will see the first official trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, will be either in front of Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016, or at the Star Wars Celebration in London from July 15 – 17.
With Captain America being a Marvel film, which is owned by Disney, and since Lucasfilm and Star Wars is owned by Disney as well, the perfect way to keep it all in the family, would be to show Rogue One‘s trailer then.
As far as the Star Wars Celebration goes, we actually got the second trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens from the Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California, last year, so this is a strong possibility.
