Star Wars: Episode VIII Filming Where Game of Thrones Once Called Home — Dubrovnik, Croatia

Thanks to a report from Croatian website Moscroatia.com, we’ve learned that Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII will be filming in Dubrovnik, Croatia, a place where HBO’s Game of Thrones used to film scenes for King’s Landing…

Director Rian Johnson is moving the cast and crew of Star Wars: Episode VIII to Dubrovnik, Croatia, for a time, to film some scenes where apparently Daisy Ridley’s Rey will run down the streets of the grand old city. If you think you’ve heard of this old city before, you have…it’s where HBO’s flagship show Game of Thrones had been filming scenes for the capital city of Westeros — King’s Landing — until the end of Season 5.

HBO and Game of Thrones have since moved on, but it seems a new tenant is in town, and according to Moscroatia.com, they will be paying rent to the tune of $38 million.

Apologies if that didn’t sound as if it was translated exactly on the nose, sometimes Google Translate doesn’t exactly get it right, but I think you get the point. There’s more information in the article about the filming of Star Wars: Episode VIII, including the use of drones to discourage fans using drones to film the actual filming of the film…still with me?

A huge problem with Game of Thrones filming in Dubrovnik, was the fan use of drones to catch the shows stars filming certain scenes in the old city’s tightly packed streets. I guess with this high-tech drones the security force plans on deploying, spying on filming will be highly locked-down.

The real question is, what scenes will be filmed with Daisy Ridley in a chase, in an old city like Dubrovnik? What Star Wars city would match the old Croatian, old-world feel? Here’s a description of what the website has for the scene that something happens while Rey walks along the sidewalk:

For now, we don’t know what is going on with Rey in Dubrovnik, or which planet the city is standing-in for. But, it’s interesting to see the beautiful old city being used again for a major production like Star Wars: Episode VIII. Of note, Gwendoline Christie plays both Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones and Captain Phasma in Star Wars…how neat would it be if she were the one to chase Rey through the streets of Dubrovnik? Her character Brienne has been there before, so she would have the advantage.
