Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), Max von Sydow (Lor San Tekka), and Jessica Henwick ( Jessika Pava, AKA Jess Testor) are just three of the main names that fans will recognize as crossover stars from HBO’s flagship show Game of Thrones to Disney/Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Of course there were more, like a split-second onscreen cameo by former Jojen Reed actor, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, and even Arya Stark’s former Water Dancing Master, Syrio Forel, Miltos Yerolemou, played a patron in Maz Kanata’s bar.
With filming underway on Star Wars: Episode VIII, many are the bits of casting news and rumors that begin to pick up steam…much like this latest story from Movie Pilot that reports former Game of Thrones Birgitte Hjort Sørensen has been cast as a Knight of Ren in Episode VIII.
"“The actress will be playing a member of the Knights of Ren, a dark side organization that operates under the command of Snoke, the Supreme Leader of the First Order.”"
If you aren’t familiar with Sørensen, she is the wildling female warrior/leader from Game of Thrones Season 4, Episode 8, “Hardhome” and her character was named Karsi. Sørensen’s character had great on-screen chemistry with Kit Harington’s Jon Snow, and even put her impressive skills to use in defense of the wildling village — Hardhome — to use, before tragically dying. Sørensen’s impact in just 15 to 20 minutes of airtime was such, that Game of Thrones fans were extremely upset the showrunners decided to killer her off so quickly.
I do have some reservations regarding this particular casting rumor, as we’ve not really been privy to knowing what roles the actors will be filling until right before the film actually premieres. For this report to say that Sørensen will be portraying a Knight of Ren, automatically throws-up all sorts of red-flags.
However, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen is a phenomenal actress, and for now has somehow managed to fly relatively under the radar. She is exactly the kind of actress that Rian Johnson would cast in the role of a dark side Force sensitive warrior. Ah well, I guess we will have to wait and watch StarWars.com for more official casting news, to see.
