ILMxLAB wants you to join the Force and help them create new virtual reality experiences.

ILMxLAB, the Lucasfilm company determined to create a new medium of immersive entertainment through virtual reality, wants you to “join the Force.”

ILMxLAB is currently endeavoring to bring the world of Star Wars as close to real life as possible through virtual reality. Using VR goggles, an entire digital world comes to life around you. Apps and other equipment allow you to interact with your surroundings: you’ll be able to touch objects, take part in battles, and talk with in-universe characters. “We’re starting to pivot towards actually developing a new medium for telling stories that the public can get and experience for themselves,” said John Gaeta, executive creative director at ILMxLAB.

The team behind ILMxLAB is not just made up of graphic designers, but also script writers, mo cap actors and actresses, and engineers. Every realm of creativity is being mined to make virtual reality, a reality.

“We’re looking for incredible talents wherever we can,” said Michael Koperwas, CG supervisor at ILMxLAB. “People that always want to push the highest bar possible, people that want to push visual fidelity, immersive storytelling, and characterization.”

“I’m not just an engineer,” said Yoojin Jang, R&D engineer. “I also feel like I’m an artist here.”

One of the things that excites me about Lucasfilm and their sub companies, like ILMxLAB, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound, is their dedication to creativity and originality, to pushing the boundaries of what has been done to doing what has never been dreamed of before. It’s rare nowadays for people to find jobs which excite them, which make them want to jump out of bed everyday to tackle the next project. But I can imagine experiencing that at Lucasfilm. And to be part of something so futuristic as virtual reality, would be life-changing. Even world-changing.
