Excerpt From Star Wars: Life Debt By Chuck Wendig Reveals Han Solo
By Elaine Tveit
An excerpt from the second book in Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath series, Star Wars: Life Debt, introduces Han Solo to Norra, Temmin “Snap” Wexley, and the rest of the gang in a violent way.
Life Debt, out in stores July 19th, 2016, sees Han Solo and Chewbacca making a detour from a mission for the New Republic to liberate the Wookiee homeworld, Kashyyyk. Unfortunately, they didn’t alert Princess Leia of their plans, and now she’s sent the colorful cast of characters introduced in Aftermath, book one in Wendig’s trilogy, to find them. When they do, they end up helping Han and Chewie in their liberation effort.

"The galaxy is changing, and with peace now a possibility, some dare to imagine new beginnings and new destinies. For Han Solo, that means settling his last outstanding debt, by helping Chewbacca liberate the Wookiee’s home world of Kashyyyk.Meanwhile, Norra Wexley and her band of rebels pursue Admiral Rae Sloane and the remaining Imperial leadership across the galaxy. Sloane, increasingly wary of the mysterious fleet admiral, desperately searches for a means to save the crumbling Empire from oblivion. Even as Imperial forces fight to regain lost ground, Princess Leia and the New Republic seek to broker a lasting peace. But the rebel’s hunt for Admiral Sloane is cut short after the disappearance of Han Solo and Chewbacca. Desperate to save them, Leia conscripts Norra, Sinjir, Jas, and the rest of their team to find the missing smugglers and help them in their fight for freedom."

The exclusive excerpt posted by Entertainment Weekly begins with Norra Wexley, her son, Temmin Wexley, Jas Amari, Sinjir, and Mister Bones stalking a target, presumably as part of a mission for the New Republic. They’re on a grassy planet, and the area they’re watching is occupied by a herd of herbivores with sharp claws. Suddenly, the herbivores become startled and rush the group. As the humans and the Zabrak are fleeing from the stampede, the herbivores start to veer away, just in time to escape a bomb that goes off in front of the New Repubic crew. Norra is disoriented by the blast and fighting off temporary blindness when she hears someone say, “Don’t move.” When she asks who’s there, the voice responds, “Name’s Han Solo. Captain of the Millennium Falcon. Who the hell are you?”

We knew from an interlude in Aftermath, book one in Wendig’s trilogy, that Han and Chewie had decided to abandon their mission to liberate Chewie’s people on Kashyyyk from the Empire, who apparently still has a stronghold there. Along the way, Han calls up some of his smuggler buddies from his past to help him in this new fight. It looks like Norra Wexley and co. are joining in the fun, as well.

Life Debt promises to be a fun romp for the heroes, especially with Han Solo and Chewbacca involved; but I’m almost more interested in what the Empire is going to be doing. The end of Aftermath hinted that a villain from Legends might be joining the canon in Life Debt or its sequel, Empire’s End. If that person is who I think it is, old and new Star Wars literature fans are in for a treat.
