If you were wondering what Mads Mikkelsen’s role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was going to be (besides Jyn Erso’s father), wonder no more, as the Danish actor recently let slip, a key piece of information…
Warning: Rogue One Spoilers
According to Radio Times, actor Mads Mikkelsen, who will be portraying the father of Jyn Erso — portrayed by Felicity Jones — in the very first standalone Star Wars film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, let slip a confirmation of a popular fan theory regarding his character, Galen Erso.
Ever since Mikkelsen’s role was confirmed as a scientist in Rogue One, many fans have been theorizing that he would be the scientist who designed the Death Star. Well, after reading his quote to Radio Times, it appears that theory may actually be true.
"“He’s the father of our main character Felicity Jones, and at the same time he is a scientist. And then uh, if people have watched the other films I’m sure they can add two and two.”"
Let’s see:
- Felicity Jones plays Jyn Erso who steals the plans to the original Death Star.
- Mads Mikkelsen plays Galen Erso, a scientist and father to Jyn Erso.
- We have seen the other films.
- Adding two and two together would strongly suggest that Galen Erso is the man who designed the Death Star from the Geonosian plans.
Yep, that makes sense. This isn’t the first time Mads Mikkelsen has let slip details about his character in Rogue One. When it was announced that the Hannibal actor would be joining the cast of the film, he was later interviewed and gave away the secret that he was going to be portraying the father of Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones).

We still don’t know if Galen Erso will give the plans to his daughter — or at the very least tell her where to find them — or if he is going to be in direct conflict with his daughter, as a scientist of the Empire. Regardless, Rogue One: A Star Wars story is already shaping up to be a fantastic Star Wars film, and with actors the caliber of Mads Mikkelsen in it, our hopes for the film are at an all time high.
