The international trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hit YouTube yesterday, and we’ve gathered the new footage and dialogue the trailer featured to analyze.

In the wake of the premiere of the second U.S. trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story last week, the international trailer for the Star Wars standalone film hit the internet yesterday with new footage and dialogue for us to analyze.

The footage from the international trailer is mostly the same as the one which premiered on NBC last Thursday, just cut differently. There were a handful of new clips and lines of dialogue, however, which gave us fresh glimpses at some of the main characters. We also learned something new about Jyn Erso’s father, Galen Erso, and the nature of his involvement in the main plot of the film.

First, the shot of Jyn entering the rebel base on Yavin IV with her hands cuffed in front of her was extended slightly.

Next, Mon Mothma is heard saying in full a line she spoke a part of in both the U.S. teaser trailer and the full trailer from last week: “We have intercepted a coded Imperial transmission. It indicates that a major weapons test is imminent.”

A new shot of her standing by the battle room holotable is then shown.

The next line of dialogue, which we had not heard prior to the international trailer, is spoken by Captain Cassian Andor. He says, “The message was sent by your father.”

A new shot of Andor in the battle room accompanies the new line.

The rest of the new material from the international trailer comes in scattered blips. At one point, Jyn Erso’s voice says, “Every day they grow stronger.” The last new footage is a shot of Bodhi Rook and a group shot of Imperial deathtroopers on a grassy landscape.

More from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

The most important new thing we learned from this trailer is Jyn’s father, Galen – a scientist who  discovered something both the Rebel Alliance and the Empire want to get a hold of – sent the message by which the rebels discover the existence of the Death Star. He may or may not have meant for the rebels to intercept the message. Given the message is Imperial and coded, and containing high level information, if he didn’t mean for the rebels to get it he must not be very skilled at coding. But I think it’s more likely Galen sent the message about the “major weapons test” to the rebels on purpose.

Regardless, the fact Galen sent the message tells us a couple of things: First, we now know he is working for or with the Empire on the Death Star, because he knows of the space station’s existence and is telling someone about it. Second, we know he is going to be a major player in this film’s plot, because of his connection to the Death Star as well as his relationship to Jyn, whose mission spawned from the message he sent.

The rest of the international trailer, in comparison to Andor’s one new line, tells us nothing about the film’s plot we did not already know. It was cool to see some new shots from the movie, however. The more I see, the longer the wait till December 16th.
