Sky Cinema Presents: Star Wars Channel

If you live in the UK it’s time to get excited, as Sky Cinema has created an unprecedented channel dedicated to showing the entire Star Wars saga, from every film in the franchise, and including The Force Awakens…

According to the Irish Times, Sky Movies is re-branding itself as Sky Cinema in the UK and Ireland. Starting in August and running through September, Star Wars will become the channel’s brand name, dominating the airways.

The offerings from the library will be the entire backlog of the Star Wars saga. There has been some back and forth on whether there will be the animated series The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels made available as well.

Director of Sky Cinema, Europe, Ian Lewis, had this to say:

"“We are giving customers an even-closer-to-the-cinema experience with enhanced picture and sound quality. Customers want a breadth of the latest quality films to enjoy with the flexibility to watch whenever they want and on whatever device they choose.”"

According to IT, there’s going to be some technical changes coming with the re-brand, as well. These changes will include:

  • Improved HD
  • Better sound quality.
  • The re-brand brings Germany, Austria and Italy, into the UK and Irish package.

As an American writing about a UK Star Wars channel, I have to say, I’m a bit jealous. I would have my television glued to the Star Wars channel 24/7, if we had this in the states, so I think this is a brilliant move on Sky Cinema’s part.
