Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy clearly has an idea for what the Han Solo movie needs to feel like. She felt strongly enough about it that she was willing to, according to reports from Variety, “fire” Miller and Lord from the project. So why not just take over directing duties herself? It is the safest way to ensure the film matches up to the tone and aesthetic she and Kasdan are reportedly looking for.

The thing about a Han Solo movie is it has to be done just right. Han Solo is such an established and beloved character. Furthermore, a Star Wars movie has to have a certain aesthetic in order for it to feel like Star Wars. It needs a great plot, diverse worldbuilding, deep characters, humor and moral quandaries. If Miller and Lord strayed too far from any of those things, the film just wouldn’t feel like a true Star Wars film. Furthermore, if Alden Ehrenreich’s Han Solo was not perfect under their direction, then something needed to be done. I’m not saying any of this was the case. I don’t want to pass negative judgment on anyone. But somewhere, somehow, the Han Solo movie under Miller and Lord’s direction was not working. Kennedy knows exactly where the problem lies, so it makes sense she should be the one to fix it.
