Rogue One and Star Wars Rebels take home four Saturn awards

At the annual Saturn Awards ceremony on Wednesday, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars Rebels took home several wins.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars Rebels, Lucasfilm’s CG-animated series on Disney XD, won big at the 43rd Saturn Awards ceremony on Wednesday night.

Rogue One received a total of three awards: Best Science-Fiction Film, Best Direction in a Film (Gareth Edwards), and Best Film Visual/Special Effects. Star Wars Rebels, meanwhile, took home the win for Best Animated TV Series.

In 1973, the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films held its first annual Saturn Awards ceremony, the purpose of which is to recognize excellence in the science fiction, fantasy and horror television and film genres. Since Star Wars‘s premiere in 1977, the franchise has consistently proved a winner in the Academy’s eyes. In 1978, for example, A New Hope won 13 Saturn Awards. At the 42nd Saturn Awards in 2016, The Force Awakens likewise received 13 nominations and took home 8. Now, Rogue One and Star Wars Rebels are among the ranks of victors.

And well they should be. Rogue One and Star Wars Rebels are great pieces of storytelling each in their own ways. Both push the boundaries of what fans expect from a Star Wars story while still hearkening back to George Lucas’s original vision for the saga.
