Dave Filoni talks Rebels season four, revealing intricate details on the final season of the series…

Star Wars Rebels season four kicked off today, where we visited the Imperial occupied world of Mandalore in the two part episode Legacy of Mandalore 1 & 2. Dave Filoni — Supervising director for Rebels — recently caught up with Star Wars expert Amy Ratcliffe, where he discussed the final season of Rebels, among other things, including this bombshell:

"There are some big time explanations and reveals that are unlike anything we’ve done."

The biggest explanation we’ve been waiting for is on the fate of Ahsoka Tano. Is it “Ahsoka lives!” or “Ahsoka lives?” It seems that we will find out the fate of the (once) Padawan to Anakin Skywalker, where ironically that is the last time we saw her, when she was battling Anakin — now Darth Vader — on the Sith world of Malachor.

A shocking moment that I’m hoping for is the appearance of Revan during the finality of Ezra’s Jedi journey. The fact that Kanan and Ezra are now on Yavin IV, a planet with major connections to the Dark Side in Legends, with some cutting room floor images and scenes of Revan unused during The Clone Wars series, the chances of him — or her — popping up are very likely. Which path will Ezra take? Will he continue down a Dark Side path, stay on a Light one, find some sort of blend, or will he sacrifice himself for the cause of the Alliance?

"As it’s getting more dangerous, the thought of losing people becomes ever more real. It makes them realize how precious life is and that they need to really value every moment together."

Let’s be honest, in the first three seasons of Rebels, we weren’t really going to lose any of the main characters of the Ghost crew. Kanan was blinded by Maul, while Hera was severely injured while battling above Concordia, but there really was no long-term threat to them. With that being said, season four raises the stakes even higher, with that possibility becoming even more likely — in fact certain doom awaits a few of these characters.

Kanan — former Padawan to Depa Bilaba and now official Jedi Knight –is certainly going to meet his demise in Rebels season four. Yoda makes it very clear to Luke that there are no more Jedi remaining in the galaxy come the events of Return of the Jedi, with Luke being the last Jedi, once Yoda becomes one with the Force. The events of the end of Rebels will be just over four years in the canon timeline before Luke’s conversation with Yoda about this very topic, Kanan could still be alive. However, if he was, wouldn’t he be more involved within the Rebellion? The writers went out of their way and made it very clear that Kanan was a Jedi Knight, foreshadowing his certain death. The before mentioned Ahsoka — and Ezra — could be alive since they are technically not Jedi. Ezra’s path is one that could go all sorts of directions, with a clouded future and one that is in constant motion for the Padawan.

Filoni accidentally revealed that Hera survives until the Battle of Endor during a panel during Star Wars Celebration.

Sabine Wren most likely will stay on Mandalore, aiding Bo-Katan in the reformation of the war-torn planet, with Zeb likely going into the Unknown Regions to join his Lasat species, who have settled in the great beyond. We now have the (likely) fate of Rex, who is looking to be part of the Pathfinders strike team on Endor, aiding Han Solo in disabling the shield of Death Star II.
