According to Variety, Keri Russell is in talks to join Star Wars: Episode IX. What could her role be?
It isn’t official just yet, but Keri Russel is in early talks to join Star Wars: Episode IX in a role that calls for fight scenes with plenty of action. The news comes from Variety, but there’s no indication of which side she’ll be fighting for.
Keri Russell has had her fair share of roles that involve action and fight scenes. She recently finished up with The Americans and had a role in Mission: Impossible III. The latter was also the last time she had worked with J.J. Abrams, which was back in 2006. It’s been a while, but the two at least have some history of working together.

What could Keri Russell’s role be?
Not knowing if she’ll be on the side of the Rebellion or the First Order leaves this open to a lot of interpretation. With her role as a spy in The Americans, she’d be a great fit as a Rebel spy who infiltrates the First Order (or vice versa). As someone who is team Rebellion, it would be great to see her on their side.
We know from past movies characters can also switch sides. We saw it with Anakin becoming Vader and with Finn wanting nothing to do with the First Order. It’s completely plausible that she could do the same or her character could just be loyal to one side when it starts.

However, I don’t think they’d introduce her as another Jedi, but she could be a Phasma-like warrior with excellent fighting skills. We’ll just have to wait and see what they ultimately decide.
Star Wars: Episode IX is set to release on December 20, 2019.
