What Star Wars fan theory did Kevin Smith write J.J. Abrams about?

For a Star Wars fan theory, Kevin Smith has found a new for Rey’s mother that blew his mind … and we take a moment to consider the possibilities.

Kevin Smith dropped a Star Wars fan theory on J.J. Abrams about Rey’s mother and now it’s all I can think about because it seems so good and so crazy all at the same time.

Star Wars fans have wanted to see a live-action Ahsoka Tano. She’s one of the most popular characters to come out of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and there was a celebration when she reappeared in Star Wars: Rebels – maybe even some tears.

We know Ahsoka didn’t die in Order 66, and there is the potential the Jedi is still alive even after Rebels. On Smith’s podcast, Fatman and Batman, he talked about Ahsoka’s return to The Clone Wars and what it would mean for the future of the Star Wars franchise.

"“We were talking about Clone Wars coming back and I said to him, ‘I got a theory that that’s the way to start introducing Ahsoka slowly into the live-action movies by bringing her back prominently in the cartoon. Because now that they don’t have Princess Leia stories to tell, they need another strong female character in the universe and Ahsoka’s been there for years, much beloved, just isn’t in the movies.“So I was like, ‘I think maybe they’re doing that so they can slowly bring her into the movies.’ And then Brian (Volk–Weiss) blows my f—ing mind by going, ‘Maybe that’s who Keri Russell’s playing?’ and then I said, ‘What the f–k, man?! I wanna see your version of Star Wars!’ Then I was like, ‘No, that can’t be it, I think Keri Russell probably plays Rey’s mom,’ and then he f—ing drops the bomb and he goes, ‘What if it’s the same person?'”"

More from Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker

We discussed different Star Wars fan theories on Dork Side of the Force before: Russell potentially being Rey’s mom or Mara Jade. She could be part of Kylo Ren’s army. We also theorized just where in Rey came from. Perhaps her parents were called “nobodies” because she was born of the Force similar to Anakin Skywalker.

But melding Ahsoka and Rey’s parentage into one is a fascinating a Star Wars fan theory, and like Smith, I’m bit a mesmerized by it now.

Of course, I don’t have the contacts Smith has. Once he considered the option of Ahsoka being Rey’s mother, he wrote to Abrams. So at the very least, Abrams is aware of this suggestion.

I’m not sure it could actually happen. I’m don’t know how biology works with human and alien babies. I’m not entirely sure what a Togruta and human child would look like. But there have been some famous Togruta Jedi including Ahsoka Tano and Shaak-Ti.

While I think this theory is a little far-fetched, but one fans such as Smith would go crazy over, it would probably require a bit more finessing to make it work with just one movie left in the saga. It would also bring about a host of more questions than answers.

And, who would be the dad?

Star Wars: Episode IX is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2019.
