Star Wars holiday gift guide: What books should you buy?

Star Wars books have the ability to add a lot to characters’ stories outside of the films and TV shows. Here’s a holiday gift guide for which books you should buy.

The holidays are quickly approaching, but there’s still time to buy some gifts for the Star Wars fans in your life (or yourself, if you so wish). I didn’t really dive into Star Wars until the new slate of movies had been announced by Disney and Lucasfilm. From there, I dove into the various media sources of great stories and found myself loving a lot of the books. Take a look at my recommendations on which ones to buy during the holiday season.

Thrawn and Thrawn: Alliances by Timothy Zahn

I own the original Thrawn trilogy that Zahn wrote, but decided to read the canon novels first. He’s back at it with a new trilogy and the first two books are already available. While each one tells a story that could be understood on its own, I do recommend reading them in order. The third book in the trilogy is in the works and you can check out a preview of it.

Leia, Princess of Alderaan by Claudia Gray

I previously wrote about the Claudia Gray books and this is one that gives more background on Leia’s life as a teenager. It plays on The Last Jedi a bit as it gives us a better understanding of her relationship with Amilyn Holdo, too. It’s a fun read and I can’t recommend all of Gray’s books enough.

Ahsoka by E.K. Johnston

After watching The Clone Wars, Ahsoka became one of my favorite characters and this book gives a great story about her time on her own. She’s always been one who wants to help others and she’s strong-willed, too. Johnston wrote a compelling story about a character who fans grew to love.

Phasma by Delilah S. Dawson

With a character like Captain Phasma, it was hard not to wonder what her background was like when we first saw her in the movies. We get that with this book and at times it is brutal, but it gives you that understanding of where she came from.

All of the above books would make for some great stocking stuffers. If you want a full list of the novels that are available, the Wikia page will have you covered for both the canon and legends novels. I stuck with canon for this list since they’re the most relevant to the current set of stories being told by Lucasfilm, but there are plenty of other gems out there.
