If the rumors are true, a new Star Wars trilogy set in the Old Republic is coming our way. Could this mean the reappearance of fan-favorite Jedi Knights and ancient Sith Lords?

It’s unclear exactly where Star Wars stories are headed after Episode IX. Up to this point, everything officially considered “canon” has tied directly into the single major storyline known as the Skywalker saga.

Even the franchise’s spinoff movies have focused on characters and events that played directly into the major plot points of each major feature film.

But the possibilities may become endless once everything doesn’t technically “have” to somehow relate back to the Skywalker bloodline.

Rumors have surfaced that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss — of Game of Thrones fame — are working on a trilogy set in the Old Republic, the part of the Star Wars timeline that takes place thousands of years before the Skywalker Saga begins.

To clear up any confusion: The Old Republic, the Galactic Republic, and the New Republic are three completely different galactic governments all representing different political eras in the galaxy. Did that just confuse you more?

The Old Republic was established thousands of years before the events of The Phantom Menace. The Galactic Republic eventually formed from the Old Republic, and is the government Palpatine was leading before he turned it into the Empire.

And though it hasn’t been a huge focus in the sequel trilogy — Starkiller Base wiped out most of its leadership in The Force Awakens — the New Republic rose out of the Rebel Alliance, and is the government Leia Organa broke away from to form the Resistance.

We’re focusing on characters that lived and died long before Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and other familiar faces from the films. You may be familiar with many of them, especially if you were into older Star Wars games or legends books.

Here are the ones we’d most like to see in Benioff and Weiss’s rumored Old Republic storyline.
