Now that we are just six months away from the release of Star Wars: the Rise of Skywalker, we can expect another new trailer for the film to be released soon.
Last April, the much-anticipated teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker was released at Star Wars Celebration for the world to see, and since then, fans of the series have eagerly awaited a follow-up.
After The Last Jedi received a mixed reaction, many fans were unsure which direction the franchise was going for the final installment in the new trilogy of films.
After the bombshell reveal the Emperor would be returning in what is the conclusion of the Skywalker saga, much of the fan base has been rampant with speculation regarding what role he will have.
Seeing as we are now less than six months away from the release of Star Wars Episode IX, we can expect a new trailer for it to be released in the near future, and with it, hopefully some new clues about what the upcoming movie will entail.
One course of action is that The Rise of Skywalker’s trailer release strategy mirrors that of the trailers for The Last Jedi, which also had a December release date, its first teaser trailer released at Star Wars Celebration in April, and then released the first official trailer in October of that year.
However, prior to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story being released in December 2016, after its teaser trailer was released in April, the first official trailer was released in August of that year.
Disney’s 2019 D23 Expo is set to run August 20-25 to show off many of its upcoming properties, and a new trailer may also be released there in order to give the movie more time to be promoted.
With this movie thought to be a “course correction” for the franchise after a few missteps, Disney would most likely release it here in order for it to be promoted more heavily, hence more people seeing it, and would ideally end the Saga off on a high note, which would hopefully spark more interest for the new trilogy set to be released in 2022.
While those target dates are still several months away, there is also the chance Disney releases the first official trailer for Star Wars Episode IX even earlier than that.
Disney has several big blockbuster films set to be released this summer, so it is possible that the next trailer is released to coincide with one of them so that it would air prior to screenings in the theaters in order to get more eyes on it.
The biggest Disney films set to be released this summer are Spiderman: Far From Home on July 2n and the live-action The Lion King on July 19, so it would not shock me at all if Disney were to release the trailer along with either of those two films.
The bottom line is we can expect a trailer for The Rise of Skywalker to be released by October at the absolute latest. However, seeing as Disney should look to promote this movie more heavily after the previous installment’s mixed reaction, the first official trailer can be expected to be released at D23 in August.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is due out in theaters on December 20th, 2019.
