Escaping to fight again

The Last Jedi was not nice to the Resistance. Most of the time, we saw the Resistance on the run with the First Order slowly picking them off.

Their ranks were decimated, most of the top-ranking officials  killed, and all that was left of the Resistance could fit in the Millennium Falcon.

It was a defeat, but there was hope in it – which Leia Organa has lived her whole life holding on to.

The Resistance – due to Luke’s Force Projection – managed to escape Crait on the Falcon. It was not a victory given their losses, but it was important. They simply lived to fight another day and, sometimes, that is enough.

After The Last Jedi, General Leia spent the time building up the Resistance and finding allies. We learned this in the Poe Dameron comics. We have gotten snippets of information based on the few pieces in tidbits released about Episode IX.

If they all had been wiped out on Crait, the Resistance sure would have failed until others who were strong enough to build it up again, which would have taken years, possibly decades.

It was important that even a defeat for them to continue. It gives hope to others knowing that the Resistance isn’t ready to give up.
