Lucasfilm to produce first non-Star Wars film since Disney acquisition
Lucasfilm is ready to produce its first film outside of a galaxy far, far away since the Disney acquisition.
Many fans only think about Lucasfilm in the context of producing Star Wars or Indiana Jones films. Considering that Lucasfilm has only produced Star Wars films since being acquired by Disney, and Indiana Jones 5 was previously the only non-Star Wars film in development, it’s an understandable misconception.
That’s all to set to change with the announcement that Lucasfilm will be producing the action fantasy film Children of Blood and Bone, based on the 2018 bestselling novel by Nigerian-American author Tomi Adeyemi.

In addition to being a bestseller, the novel received an abundance of critical praise, with Entertainment Weekly asserting that it “has all the makings of a masterpiece” and NPR hailing it as “a fast-paced, excellently crafted hero’s journey in a fantasy nation that is informed by African mythology (specifically West African, in the case of the book) and populated with compelling and nuanced black characters.” It would be a huge step forward for representation in Lucasfilm movies and one of the darkest stories they’ve ever told.
Star Wars will always be Lucasfilm’s juggernaut, but it’s promising news that the company will produce films beyond their famous franchises. Lucasfilm became a giant in the entertainment industry for being particularly innovative and imaginative in the first place. Star Wars and Indiana Jones forever changed the movie landscape. While not quite as popular, Lucasfilm also produced cult classic films like Labyrinth and Willow.
It’s exciting to know that Lucasfilm can be innovative and imaginative again beyond their dependable franchises. There’s enormous potential for them to branch out with new films–possibly even new franchises–that will once again forever change the movie landscape. Children of Blood and Bone is the spark that can light that fire.
