Star Wars: Rian Johnson is moving on from the legacy characters
Rian Johnson will be back to helm another Star Wars trilogy. This time he’s moving away from the characters we know and love.
Rian Johnson is still making a Star Wars trilogy.
It feels that needs to be said. With the backlash The Last Jedi received, there are many who wished he would go away and not touch the franchise again.

But that’s not the case at all. Johnson is still working on one and also talking about some of his plans for the Star Wars trilogy he envisions.
Johnson recently spoke about what he sees for the future of Star Wars without going into details, but it does give us an idea of what’s to come.
The answer: Nothing that we have seen before.
"“I think that the fun and challenging part of it is to dive in, figure out what’s exciting and then figure out what it’s going to be,” he said. “We’re doing something that steps beyond the legacy characters. What does that look like? To me, the blue sky element of it is what was most striking about it. I know the way that I’m coming at it and what’s fun about it for everyone in Lucasfilm is figuring out, ‘what’s the next step?’ It really makes you think and figure out what the essence of Star Wars is for me and what that will look like moving forward.”"
Johnson says he is moving “beyond the legacy characters.” He handled their arcs in The Last Jedi with Luke’s ending in his death and becoming one of the Force.
But this gives Johnson a chance to tell a story the way he wants it to be with a Star Wars scope. For any creator, having a blank slate is exhilarating but also terrifying. Yet, it’s those nerves and conflict that can bring out the very best.
There’s no way to know how this will tie in the David Benioff and D.B. Weiss trilogy or even if the two will even be related.
I, for one, hope Johnson goes someplace we haven’t seen before. I’m not talking about Star Trek, but there is an entire universe and timeline that is worth exploring within the rules that have been established for Star Wars.
There’s no timetable yet as to when we can expect Johnson’s first movie. In the meantime, we’ll just have The Mandalorian, The Rise of Skywalker and everything else in between to hold us over.
