A spin-off series of Solo: A Star Wars Story is rumored to be in development for the Disney+ streaming service, possibly involving the Crimson Dawn
Back in May 2018, Solo: A Star Wars Story was released as a part of Disney’s Star Wars anthology movie series, serving as an origin story for Han Solo prior to the events of A New Hope.
The film under performed massively at the box office, largely due the mixed reaction that fans gave The Last Jedi just 5 months prior, and due to it being released closely to Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2, which were 2 of the most popular movies of 2018.

As a result, Disney scrapped their anthology films in development and changed the direction of the franchise, opting to take a hiatus from releasing new films after The Rise of Skywalker this December until 2022.
Despite the bad rap the movie has received, those who have seen it generally give it positive reviews, myself included, and while it wasn’t a perfect movie, it was an entertaining story and Alden Ehrenreich did as good a job as anyone could have hoped in the role of a young Han Solo.
In fact, back in May this year, to coincide with the one year anniversary of Solo: A Star Wars Story’s theatrical release, the Star Wars fan podcast The Resistance Broadcast started a campaign to get a sequel to the film made, with their hashtag #MakeSolo2Happen trending worldwide on twitter at one point.
According to starwarsunity.net, while a direct sequel is not currently in development, it was reported that a spin-off series to Solo is rumored to be in the works as a Disney+ Series.
"While we’ll probably not see a sequel or continuation of Han’s story, I’ve heard a rumor that some kind spin-off set after the events of the movie is being developed as a Disney+ series. As it probably wouldn’t be about Han, Chewie, or Lando; some kind of underworld series dealing with the Crimson Dawn and other scoundrels sounds the most likely."
The article floats the idea that the series would not follow the story of Han, Chewbacca or Lando directly, but instead focus on the underworld of Star Wars, possibly the Crimson Dawn Crime Syndicate that was introduced in ‘Solo’.
At the conclusion of ‘Solo’ is was revealed that Darth Maul was the head of the Crimson Dawn and that Qi’ra, Han’s love interest in the film, was now reporting directly to him as one of his subordinates.
To me, this plot thread was one of the things I would want to explore the most if a sequel to Solo were ever to be made, and if this rumor it to be true, I think making it the basis for a Disney+ series could be a very interesting way to go with it as well.
Darth Maul is a fan favorite character among Star Wars fans and I’d be curious to see how the former Sith Lord is at the head of a criminal empire.
It could also give us the opportunity to run into other classic characters from the time period such as a young Boba Fett or Jabba the Hutt, and down the line, Ehrenreich’s Han Solo and Chewbacca may even turn up in it at some point too.
While it the article states otherwise, I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up happening, as many fans did enjoy Solo: A Star Wars Story and wanted to see more of those characters, and seeing as now we are getting an Obi-Wan series, clearly, anything is possible.
