Resistance Reborn is out in bookstores today, giving us the story of what happens between Star Wars: The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.

I haven’t read it yet, but early reviews have been positive.

It’s an important story to fill in the gap because based on the trailer for Episode IX, part of the Resistance has been rebuilt. You don’t get all of those ships coming together on a whim.

In The Last Jedi, there were just a few members of Resistance left. Really, every member of the Resistance was on the Millennium Falcon, plus Black Squadron that was another mission. The First Order issued a devastating blow on the Resistance between D’Qar and Crait.

What I always love about the Star Wars books is how they add another layer to what is already going on – especially for the movie novelizations.

We see what is happening on screen, but the books allow us to get into the minds of the characters. Here, we get a chance to see a vulnerable Leia, who thinks about her family and all she has lost. It’s truly heartbreaking because even in the face of all of these tragedies, she still puts herself out there.

Fans will learn what kind of guilt will sit with Poe because of the loss of the bombers and the attempted mutiny that resulted in ships being destroyed over Crait. That’s a heavy burden for someone to take on.

Rey is still coming into her own, learning to use the Force. She failed when trying to bring Ben back and those burdens will sit with her as well.

There’s so much to unpack and much of this will be addressed in the book by Rebecca Roanhorse. I can’t wait to read it.
