Rey

Saoirse Ronan auditioned for this Star Wars Role

The actress behind several film roles auditioned for a character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Which character was it?

Saoirse Ronan, known for her roles in films like The Lovely Bones, Lady Bird, and Little Women, had auditioned for a role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The role was not specified however one of the scenes involved her holding a lightsaber.

Could this mean she auditioned for Rey?

From the Stylecaster article 13 Actors Who Were Almost Cast in ‘Star Wars’—Including a Few Oscar Winners Ronan explained in a 2013 Empire interview:

“Everyone has auditioned for it,”. “So many people I know have gone in for the part I’ve gone in for, and guys who’ve gone in for a particular part, so I’d imagine J.J. [Abrams] is probably just scanning the earth to find the people that one needs, but nobody has a clue what it’s about, and nobody’s read the script.”

She later explains how much fun it was to pretend to be finding and inspecting a lightsaber.

We can look back now and understand the great anticipation the seventh film in the Star Wars saga had. The last film at the time was the prequel Revenge of the Sith released in 2005.

This means devoted Star Wars fans had a lot of expectations for the continuation of such a universally known and popular film franchise.

After learning about Saoirse’s experience we wonder how many other actresses auditioned for Rey before Daisy Ridley was chosen. The Star Wars franchise is far from over.

Maybe audiences will see Saoirse in a future role.
