Dooku, once a Jedi himself, lost faith with the Jedi Order and vowed to leave if anything more dire happened. The death of Qui-Gon Jinn, among other things swayed Dooku to quit the order. Yoda, former master of Dooku was heartbroken and disappointed.
Little did anyone know Dooku had been approached after leaving by a certain Sith Lord named Sidious (who was seeking a new apprentice after the unforeseen Maul defeat), approximately 10 years before the Clone Wars began. Dooku joined forces and the two plotted the fall of the Jedi and the Republic. Over the ten years plans were set in place including convincing Sifo Dyas to set up a Grand Army of the Republic, using bounty hunter Jango Fett as a template.
A decade later, Dooku made a daft attempt at overthrowing Sidious as he attempted to pursuade Obi-Wan Kenobi on Geonosis to join him.
“Together we can destroy the Sith.”
Kenobi was not convinced and the two along with Anakin Skywalker later fought a fierce duel, Yoda coming to the rescue of the duo of Skywalker and Kenobi. The republic brought their clone army to combat the Separatists and the Clone Wars began.
Through the years of war, the Jedi council and Republic came closer to ending the war, but began to realize somewhat late that Dooku may have been on to something with the Dark Lord of the Sith ruling the Republic theory. Most members of the Jedi council did not trust the Chancellor and suspected influence by a dark lord. Worst fears were realized when the Jedi find out the terrible truth.
The Clone Wars would continue to rage for the next three years toward the very end of the conflict. Supreme Chancellor Palpatine was taken “hostage” by the cyborg general Grievous in an attempt to sway the war toward the Separatists. Dooku and Grievous waited aboard the general’s ship Invisible Hand.
Sure enough, the council would send who else, but Kenobi and Skywalker to rescue the chancellor. Sidious had lied to Dooku promising that he would intervene if Anakin got the upper hand.
However, with Kenobi dispatched, Anakin let his hate flow through him and literally got the upper hands of Dooku. He sabered the hands. Dooku now dropped to his knees as Anakin held both sabers. Dooku, held at bay by Anakin with both sabers in an X pattern, looks to his master to step in.
Sidious intervenes alright. He orders Anakin to “Kill him, kill him, now.” Anakin obliges after initially grappling with his conscience. Count Dooku, Darth Tyranus would not be the last casualty of this Dark Lord or war, but surely one who played his role perfectly, even in the end.
