Even though The High Republic books are months away, Star Wars is introducing us to characters we are bound to meet in the upcoming publishing series.

With The High Republic publishing series debuting later this year, Star Wars is introducing us to new Jedi Knights.

The story of The High Republic – relegated to books and comics for the time being – takes place about 200 years before the events of The Phantom Menace. There are new characters, places and moments to learn.

More from Star Wars Books

Star Wars released the first group of new characters in a post on its site, which you can read more about here.

Here’s what we learned from the latest announcement:

The Jedi are righteous

This isn’t anything new. From the best Jedi we already know, they have always been righteous, but we are getting to see them as a group now rather than individuals operating under a code.

The new characters including Avar Kriss and Stellan Gios seem to be exactly like the Jedi we imagined. We’ll get to learn more about them and how they fight for the galaxy with the new books and comics.

Jedi as they should be

We learned more about the Jedi Order in the prequel trilogy, but for the most part we have really only known the Jedi as individuals. In The Phantom Menace, the Jedi were already on the brink of destruction with Order 66 coming not too far off.

Yet The High Republic will show us the Jedi at their peak.

According to Lucasfilm Publishing creative director Michael Siglan, “Readers will see a very wide variety of Jedi in this era.”

It’s a hopeful time

That’s a weird thing to mention for Star Wars because while there has been hope, there’s also been so much heartache and sadness. The movies have focused so heavily on the fight between the Jedi and Sith.

So, we get to see the Jedi during a positive time – although I’m sure there are plenty of obstacles along the way.

Plenty of aliens

The Jedi aren’t just human. The initial wave of characters also gives us Twi-lek and other unnamed alien races. In an earlier image, we saw a Wookiee Jedi Knight as well.
