Star Wars book reveal gives us just enough to want more
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sparked so many questions about Poe Dameron when the ace pilot of the Rebellion turned out to not be so squeaky clean.
This led to fans getting to take a ride to Kijimi and a sneak peek into Poe’s younger years where it turns out he was a spice runner. While the two-and-half-hour movie didn’t elaborate on just how Poe wound up on Kijimi and then left with a bounty on his head it just meant LucasFilm would tell that story in another medium.

Free Fall is that opportunity. It’s a young adult novel that is scheduled for an August release. It tells the story of Poe’s teen years and what led him to leave Yavin IV and become a spice runner.
Fans got a peek at part of the first chapter recently with an exclusive from IGN. It also has an interview with author Alex Segura that you can check out here.
If the rest of the books is anything like the opening scene, we’re in for a bumpy and emotional ride.
Star Wars: Poe Dameron’s background
Many Star Wars fans have already met Poe’s parents – Shara Bey and Kes Dameron in the Marvel comic Shattered Empire. Some of the info that we know about Poe is that his parents were Rebels and fought against the Empire. While they made it out of the war, his mother died when Poe was young leaving his father to raise him.
While knowing those details make you feel for the Poe, the revealed scene from Free Fall makes it hurt even more. You see Poe in, well, a free fall. Despite his mother being gone for eight years at this point, she is still a huge emotional part of him. He never got over the loss, which is natural for any one losing a parent.
He rebelled and did dumb things as a way to lash out.
Segura’s writing pulls you right into those emotions including every heartbreaking moment. You can see Poe defying authority and feeling so deeply that it affected his logical thinking.
With just a few words from the opening scene, Free Fall has become a book I plan to read on the day of release.
Free Fall is scheduled to come out on August 4.
