He described working on the set and it is interesting to see what others have to say about working with Jon Favreau. The behind-the-scenes documentary Disney Gallery has given us a look at how Favreau works. It’s been fascinating to watch and then also hear how others describe working on set.
The technology used is old, but new at the same time. An upgrade to how sets are created.
Hargrave told Collider:
"“It’s interesting in that it’s almost returning to an older school of filmmaking where you have background prints up. Because you’re seeing and photographing it in real time; a lot of these locations are real or they’re built ahead of time. You have to know your shots. So much prep goes into it. They’re not making it up, going, ‘Oh, well, we could put this in the background.’ They know exactly what they’re going to do. They have a really crazy way of doing virtual scouting where you can ‘scout’ the location before you shoot and see where you want to put the camera. It’s a really wild process. It’s extremely futuristic and kind of going back to an old school way of filmmaking where you have to do a lot more prep. You can’t just throw up a blue screen and wing it on the day.”"
Hargrave has been a stunt coordinator on a number of movies including Avengers: Endgame, Deadpool 2, Thor: Ragnorak, among other films. Hargrave is also the director of Extraction, the Chris Hemsworth action flick on Netflix.
His background is one that it seems Favreau was looking for. Hargrave mentioned a producer on The Mandalorian reached out to him when Favreau wanted to add someone with more action experience. That paints a picture as to how Season 2 might be shaping up.
There was plenty of action in Season 1, which made for some of the most thrilling moments of the series. When the Mandalorians came to rescue Din Djarin from the bounty guild, jet packs and incendiary weapons were a wonderful site. When Din Djarin initially rescued The Child with IG-11, there were bullets flying and few swift moves to get us invested
Now, it’s time for more action.
Stream The Mandalorian on Disney+. Season 2 is scheduled to premiere in October.
