Giancarlo Esposito, who plays Gideon, recently spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the Dark Saber and his role. While Esposito is adept at not revealing too much (See: his time on Breaking Bad), he did offer a few hints of what’s to come in Season 2.
"Having the saber means I could use it and do my own dirty work. That I’m a fighter, I’m a warrior. That’s part of me. It also creates the possibility that he is one of the ones. You know, he possibly has that. That to me is interesting because is he really that fallen hero? Is he a descendent of Darth Vader? Who is he? What does he want? He knows all about everything and you will have to wait to find out. He’s actually pretty good with dark saber."
While Gideon can so his dirty work, he had the stormtroopers doing it for him when we met him. But now that Mando and his friends have taken down the stormtroopers and Gideon is pulling out all that it takes, which means the Dark Saber.
The Dark Saber seems like it’s more a weapon of last resort since he decided to wait until he was defeated to bring it out.
However, the more interesting of Esposito’s comments seem to lie with subtly discussing the Force. It’s a wonder that he would bring up being “one of the ones” if he didn’t have anything to do with it in the first place. It could mean that Gideon is Force-sensitive and he can use the Dark Saber to its full abilities.
It’s a wonder who Gideon will duel with. Din Jarrin – and by association Baby Yoda – is a potential target, but with all the rumors of just who may be appearing in the second season, it really could be anyone. The Force wasn’t a big topic of The Mandalorian with Baby Yoda using it sparingly. However, it seems it may be front and center come this Fall.
