Is Darth Vader’s grandson, Ben Solo getting his own spin-off project?

Ben Solo might’ve descended from a powerful Force Sensitive family, but he came to idolize Anakin’s dark persona, Darth Vader. He wanted to complete the “mission” his grandfather started all those years earlier: eliminate the Jedi Order. However, he soon realized that it was Palpatine’s plan the whole time and joined forces with Rey to stop him from returning to power at the cost of his own life.

Ben willed himself to change and not because he was forced to do so. Sure, his mother allowed the last of her life force to push him back to the light, but the rest was his making. This makes us wonder if a series or movie could dive deeper into Solo’s story before The Force Awakens.

Star Wars rumor: Lucasfilm developing Ben Solo project

Dexterto is reporting a rumor of a potential project at Lucasfilm involving the embattled grandson of Anakin Skywalker. While the sequel trilogy showed the conflict he faced with the light and dark sides, if a show or film is in the works it may show his time as his Uncle Luke’s apprentice and how this affected him as an individual. Ben was the descendent of one the galaxy’s most famous Jedi and being pressured into being as good as his grandfather would’ve been stressful to anyone in that position.

More from Kylo Ren

If this report is more than just speculation, it would serve a similar purpose as The Clone Wars which gave more depth into the reason behind the turn of Ben’s grandfather, Anakin when he became Darth Vader.

Kessel Run Transmissions, who was the source that hinted at the Star Wars Rebels sequel series, mentions if there is a show based on Ben, it may be animated.

Before The Clone Wars, we only saw Anakin’s story in three films, not including the micro-series, Clone Wars from 2002-2005. Adding an extra layer to Ben’s story will make him more sympathetic as a character.

Ben Solo and his turn to the Dark Side

Parts of Ben’s turn to the Dark Side have already been explored. Leia and Han were concerned when they agreed to start a family, given how the darkness plagued the former princess’ biological bloodline.

Upon Ben’s birth, Leia, Han, and Luke agreed that they were to keep the truth from the boy about his maternal grandfather. However, two decades later, their plan ultimately backfired as the former Alderaanian royal’s political rivals discovered that Vader was her biological father and leaked the information to the public which ultimately included her son. This was highlighted in the book Bloodline.

With the dark side and the light fighting for control over him, Ben chose the darkness that destroyed Anakin’s soul almost fifty years earlier. Some of this ended up highlighted in The Rise of Kylo Ren comic series by Charles Soule. This story showed Ben razoring his uncle’s Jedi academy which was also seen in Rey’s vision in The Force Awakens.

What platform might a potential Ben Solo project air on?

If we had to guess, the best place to air a Ben Solo spin-off would be Disney+. It would also be perfect as a television series given a film wouldn’t be able to show as much detail. Though, it may work as a TV movie. If it’s not suited for the streaming service, the other safest place to distribute it would be Disney Channel.

What do we know about the Ben Solo project?

There’s very little that we know, as this is just a rumor for the time being. We are not at liberty to confirm anything, as we’re uncertain if any of this is true.

It is unclear what path the project could go down if there is one in the works. It might follow Ben as a Jedi or it might track his journey as Kylo Ren before The Force Awakens. Perhaps it might go down a path where he struggles to control his light and dark side urges and we see both sides of the equation.

It is also unknown if actor Adam Driver would reprise his live-action role should the show be animated. Oscar Isaac reprised his role as Poe Dameron in Star Wars Resistance and so did Gwendoline Christie where she returned to provide the voice for Captain Phasma.

If push comes to shove, they may ask a seasoned voice actor to take on the role of Ben and/or Kylo Ren, whatever comes first. It might even give Matthew Wood a second chance to reprise the role from Star Wars Resistance.
